A Rich History
Members of the Ojibwe and Dakota Sioux tribes were original inhabitants of Minnesota in the 19th century. The name Minnesota is derived from a Sioux word meaning “cloudy water.” The state is now home to 9 federally recognized Ojibwe, Sioux and Chippewa tribes.
